This week and a few weeks ago
I need to backtrack, to a few weeks ago, when I attended a dance performance at The Koubek Center in Little Havana and an interesting sound and poetry performance at The Bridge Miami. At the Koubek I watched Roxana Barba and fellow dancers command the stage with moves, spoken word and video during “Apuntes Americanos-Kanay".” It was a compelling and thought-provoking performance. And at The Bridge Miami I watched as Dutch avant-garde composer and performance artist Jaap Blonk meticulously dissected letter sounds and gave an informative talk about his work. I encourage you to visit both these venues for an upcoming performance, I promise it will be an unforgettable experience.
Saturday morning I was the proud aunt, sitting in the audience listening to my nephew Danny Davila talk about his career in production design. He was funny, eloquent, touching and even a bit emotional at times. Pure Danny in all his honest, compassionate and hard-working glory. Lots of family members, friends and colleagues were in the audience. He’s carved out an impressive career and has been a great mentor to many in his field. There’s still one more FilmCraft Series talk on Nov. 25, read about the whole series here.
Yesterday I spent a wonderful morning at the parents support group meeting at the Sandra DeLucca Developmental Center, where my son Nicholas goes three times a week to learn life skills and stay in shape. It was a great presentation as always and afterwards Joyce, one of the fellow moms and I grabbed lunch at Caribe Restaurant. It was a lovely day.
Last night I attended the opening of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s NightGarden Experience, a lovely light show that brings the gardens to life at night. I went with my sister Ana and we had a lovely time taking in all the beautiful light displays. The pulled pork sliders they were handing out were pretty tasty as was my prosecco. It was wonderful catching up with her and spending quality time.
This weekend, I’m looking forward to watching local actors in the world premiere play “Hoo Hah” presented by True Mirage Theater at Main Street Playhouse in Miami Lakes. My friend Janet invited me and her husband Ruben is running the sound during the production. I’m sorry to say this is the final weekend but you can catch it tonight through Sunday. Read a review of the play here.
And finally, here’s my latest article for the Artburst Miami blog on a great program at the Arsht Center. Click here to read it. Also, I’m currently working on an article about an underwater art installation along Miami’s reef line, an arts and conservation project I’m so excited to write about. I’ll reveal more as I continue working on it.
Thanks for always reading and I’ll see you right here next Friday!
