Theater, fish dip, prints and book fair

Let’s try this again (I just had this week’s blog entirely written and didn’t hit “Save!”) so…

This week on…

My haul from the Small Press Fair in Dania. I made the print on the brown paper bag in the middle and the print with the little red snails is Elizabeth’s. I also bought the Edgar Allen Poe print and balloon prints (the latter of which is upside down) from an artist at the fair.

This is the cool machine I used to make the brown paper bag print.

Saturday…

Vance and I went to the Small Press Fair in Dania to support our daughter Elizabeth and her friends who had a table there. Elizabeth was selling totes with one of her prints on it, her Zine that she created in high school along with lots of other little prints and stickers. She did pretty good, selling $150 worth of stuff!

Smoked fish dip

After that we went to the Haulover Marina where we strolled, looking at the boats, the sunset and the water. Also, since there was still a captain selling fish, I bought a nice sized mackerel.

The program from Sunday’s play

Sunday…

While Vance threw the mackerel in the smoker, I went to the theater. I accompanied my friend Janet to Main Street Playhouse in Miami Lakes where True Mirage Theater was presenting “Hoo Hah” a funny and also suspenseful play whose main protagonist spent the entire play choking on a walnut in a dressing room while the rest of the characters refused to come to her aid, including her mother. It got violent toward the end with our friend Ricky J. Martinez playing the role of the murderer. It was a fun ride. Then when I got home, I made some fantastic fish dip and had that for dinner.

Thursday…

Last night, my sister and I went to Actors’ Playhouse where we watched the play “Sweet Goats and Blueberry Senoritas” a lovely story about a Cuban American woman longing for home but also to be independent, find her own way and follow here dreams. I wrote about the play, written by local playwrights Vanessa Garcia and Richard Blanco, for Biscayne Times. It was a beautiful, touching, funny and also sad story told tenderly through the playwright’s words and the acting of a phenomenal cast. It’s showing through Dec. 3 I highly recommend going to see it. Click here to read the article I wrote about it for Biscayne Times.

The trio of BLOOM! By Sway standing tall and swaying in all directions while their outfits bloomed right before our eyes. It was a fun and unique performance that made everyone smile. Also, the blue skies were a welcome change after four days of heavy, heavy rain.

Friday (today)…

I kept with tradition and went to the first day of the Miami Book Fair’s street fair. I strolled through the Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus checking out the vendors, enjoying some food at the food court and watching a cool performance called BLOOM! By Sway presented by Live Arts Miami. Click on that link to see a video of this trio who are described as “a colorful and spirited aerial spectacle in Downtown Miami.” Catch them tomorrow or Sunday at the street fair where they’ll be performing three times each day. And make sure to find the booth where all books are $1!

Tomorrow I’m looking forward to helping out at my church, St. Martha’s Catholic Church where I’m bringing two big trays of stuffing for the Thanksgiving pot luck. Then on Sunday night, I’m finally going to catch a performance by dance troupe Brigid Baker Wholeproject at Miami-Dade County Auditorium. I’ve been wanting to see them for a while and am making it a point to finally go. I’ll tell you how it was next Friday. I recommend any show at MDCA where they’ve got some great programming. Click here to see what’s coming up at that venue. They’ve got lots of holiday shows coming up.

Joaquin!!!!

And finally, here’s some cuteness overload with a link to my great nephew Mazen’s instructional video on how he builds a ladybug house and my other great nephew Joaquin showing off with that killer smile, gorgeous blue eyes and adorable dimple.

Here’s hoping next that next week is a little bit smoother since this week we’ve had to deal with a huge tree branch falling on our house and making a hole in the roof. And with all the rain the last four days, it wasn’t a pretty sight.

Wish us luck and see you next Friday!
