So much to tell you
If you read my blog regularly then you know you’re going to read about plenty of cultural happenings and that’s what I’m starting with this week.
Sunday night I finally got to experience the brigid baker wholeproject dance troupe live at Miami-Dade County Auditorium. I watched as the dancers worked through a variety of movements and even interacted with cloud-like headpieces and beautiful dangling dresses during the performance of “Cloud 9.” Visit the link above and see where you can catch them next, they’re worth seeing.
Monday I had a long overdue lunch with a dear friend Elizabeth Romanik. We met at the lovely Cafe Creme, where she’s a regular and where I love to walk to since it’s just three blocks from my house. I tried something new, their flatbread pizza with prosciutto and arugula and it was delicious. I’ve recommended this place many times in this blog and am recommending it again.
Tuesday was an amazing, amazing day. I spent the morning, into the early afternoon, taking a tour of the Arts in Medicine program at the Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida. There, I experienced the most beautiful form of art therapy where musicians and visual artists perform and work throughout the space, engaging cancer patients in all types of hands on creative arts and playing their favorite music. Violinists, singers and pianists perform and artists aid patients in creating beadwork, painting, mixed media and more. I cried, I got emotional, I was touched and deeply moved. I cannot wait to write about this program. I’ve been a strong believer in the healing power of art therapy and now there’s data driven proof. Read all about it at the link above.
Thursday morning, Thanksgiving Day, Vance and I along with Nick and Elizabeth followed tradition and attended the Winternational Thanksgiving Day Parade just a few blocks from our house. It was fun shenanigans as always. Just see the pictures above. Afterwards, we had a lovely, relaxed Thanksgiving celebration with my sisters, nieces and nephews and lots of great nieces and nephews too!
And finally tonight, I got to see another dance troupe I’d always wanted to see live, Pioneer Winter Collective performing their signature piece “Birds of Paradise” presented with all new music and poetry at MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami). It was a transformative performance and I was in awe at their graceful movement that melded so well with the powerful spoken word and avant garde music. I highly recommend you catch one of their performances. According to their website, they are a “Miami-based, intergenerational and physically integrated dance-theater company that creates performance in public spaces, museums and galleries, stages, schools, and film.” Go see them, you’ll surely be transformed by their memorable performance.
Tomorrow I’m looking forward to catching the last of the Filmcraft Series at Coral Gables Art Cinema and then having some turkey tortilla soup at Casa Wutzler.
See you all next week and until then, be well, stay humble and be grateful.
