Whirlwind week
Phew, what a week it’s been, which is why this is hitting your inbox late on a Saturday night.
To recap…
Last Saturday I spent the day with my friend Monica discovering a new gallery, Primary in Little River and then grabbing a bite at The Citadel Food Hall. I’m writing about the exhibition on display there by artist Avery Pack. I’ll share that article once it’s published. And I definitely recommend a stop in at The Citadel to have well honestly, a little bit of everything. The variety of food available there is impressive.
That night, Vance and I took Elizabeth out to dinner for her birthday. We chose La Fresa Francesa in Hialeah, knowing she would love the very cozy, French spot that’s in the most unexpected of places… a tiny strip shopping mall. She loved it. That’s her with a lit up ferris wheel of beignets, one of the restaurant’s most decadent desserts. The meal was again, amazing, remember I mentioned this place a few weeks back when Vance and I had a date night there.
On Sunday Vance, Nick and I did our obligatory afternoon at the park. We actually went back to Hialeah to spend time at Amelia Earhart Park. It’d been a long while since I’d visited and it was so much fun. We actually rented an adorable little four-wheel bike trolley that all three of us squeezed into and rode around the paved road throughout the park. That’s us right before we turned it back in. We also played frisbee and enjoyed looking out on the water. Click on the link above to find out about all the fun activities there.
Tuesday night I went to the media night for the Broadway in Miami production of “Ain’t Too Proud,” the story of The Temptations, at the Adrienne Arsht Center. It was date night for Vance and I and we enjoyed it this second time almost as much or more than the first time we saw it at the Broward Center. It was also nice to also run into Liz Amore, my Editor from South Florida on the Cheap, who I’d never met in person.
Wednesday night I attended the opening reception of MOCA’s latest exhibition featuring works by Alabama-born artist Lonnie Holley whose sandstone pieces took my breath away. There are 70 of his pieces in all on display. I also was in awe of the amazing work produced by the 12 Miami-based artists that make up the South Florida Cultural Consortium part of the show. I chatted with lots of artists in attendance whose work I admire and have actually written about. It was a fun night. Check out the show which will be up through Oct. 1.
Thursday night, I stopped in at Old Greg’s Pizza in the Design District to visit Jackie Richie, who owns the spot with her partner Greg. She treated me to a whole bunch of food that I brought home to the family. Jackie and Greg are a testament to resilience, launching this business during the pandemic and eventually opening at this lovely brick and mortar location. They took great care in curating the decor, all of which has a personal story. Listening to Jackie tell it was half the fun. If you get the chance and are craving amazing pizza, meatballs, wings, subs or a great salad and lovely ambiance. stop in. Their hospitality is infectious and their food is addicting. Just look at that slice of lamb sausage pizza.
And today, I spent the day at my friends Jean and Iggy’s studio in the Bird Road Arts District. They are two of the most creative, hard working, down to earth artists/creatives I know. If you get the chance, visit their space CollaboARTive to see their work.
Finally, my review of Florida Grand Opera’s “Barber of Seville” was posted on Miami Artzine. Click on the link to read it and if it sounds interesting, you can catch the last few performances at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts next weekend.
I want to close by saying a heartfelt thank you and God Bless to all the many prayer warriors who checked on my husband Vance during this tough week. He’s doing great and we both appreciate all the love and concern. It truly means the world to us.
Until next week…I leave you with these breathtaking photos of the views from my walk over the William Powell Bridge on Key Biscayne.
