Halloween party, sis birthday and more
I know Halloween isn’t until next Tuesday but Vance and I went to a Halloween party last Saturday. It was hosted by our friends Rick and Adina. Adina is a nut for Halloween and the house was incredibly decorated, the food was great and the guests, which included our friends Kevin and Michelle made this a really memorable Halloween soiree. I mean Adina thought of everything… JELLO shot syringes, skull shaped mozzarella cheese and a ceramic Frankenstein head chip bowl whose mouth was spewing vomit-like guacamole (the guac was delicious!).
Saturday morning I drove up to the Aventura Branch Library to listen to Miami poet Richard Blanco and lots of other writers who came together to share their favorite published poem and share what it meant to them. Blanco if you’ll recall was the Presidential Inaugural Poet chosen by President Barack Obama. Also reading one of his favorites was Mitchell Kaplan, owner of Books & Books Coral Gables and founder of the Miami Book Fair. He was amusing as always. It was a special morning.
Tuesday, I treated my sister Mari to a birthday lunch at Jaguar Restaurant in Coconut Grove. She’d been wanting to eat there for a while and we had a delicious celebratory meal. We shared a tasty ceviche appetizer and then she ordered the grilled mahi and I the grilled salmon. We finished with a decadent chocolate cake for dessert. They brought the cake out with a candle and the staff sang her happy birthday which was very sweet.
Yesterday I attended the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau Annual Meeting which was held at the lovely rooftop Sunset Vista Salon at the Miami Beach Convention Center. It was nice to see lots of familiar faces from the industry and hear an honest and transparent presentation of the GMCVB’s past year and their upcoming goals. The view was spectacular!
Tonight I’m headed to a dance performance at the Koubek Center, tomorrow morning I’m attending Miami Film Lab’s Filmcraft Series and tomorrow night I’ll be attending an avant garde performance arts/music/poetry/spoken word event at The Bridge Miami.
Here’s a link to articles on all of those events, two of which were penned by moi! If you’re a family member reading this, I think you’ll recognize one of the speakers in the Filmcraft Series. Hint: It’s the guy speaking on Nov. 4.
Apuntes Americanos-Kanay at Koubek Center tonight and Saturday
Miami Film Lab Filmcraft Series at Coral Gables Art Cinema tomorrow morning
Remnant Miami at The Bridge Miami tomorrow night
I hope you’ll be inspired to visit the restaurant or any of the venues I mentioned. Let me know if you do!
And one more thing… a parting shot of an amazing pasta dish my son Michael made at his new job in Brooklyn at Forma Pasta Factory.
