Food rescued, food eaten

I rescued a lot of food this week. Food that would’ve otherwise been thrown out but instead went to feed people less fortunate.

Panera leftover bread and baked goods going to Broward Outreach Center

On Monday night I visited Panera in Aventura, like I do every other Monday, where I loaded up my car with lots of leftover breads and sweets and drove them to the Broward Outreach Center in Hollywood.

Car loaded up with flowers, produce and more from Trader Joe’s in Coral Gables, going to Village (Free)dge.

Lots and lots of milk going to the Village too.

Wednesday morning, I drove to Trader Joe’s in Coral Gables, loaded up my car with lots of donated food and flowers and drove to Village (Free)dge in Liberty City where Founder Sherina Jones feeds the local community. She started this mission during the height of the pandemic and continues it to this day. I love seeing her beautiful smiling face every week when we have some heartfelt and honest chats.

Loads and loads of lettuce from Imagine Farms going to Lotus House and Miami Rescue Mission.

Frozen meat from Kiki on the River going to Miami Rescue Mission.

And yesterday I did two food rescues on behalf of Food Rescue US South FL. First I went to Imagine Farms where I met the lovely Cheryl and her volunteers who loaded up my car with 8-10 bags of her lettuce. I drove that to Lotus House, a women’s shelter where I was greeted by the gracious Chef Betty Forcer who was happy to take several bags of the lettuce. After that, I headed to Kiki on the River, where Chef Steve Rhee loaded my car with lots of frozen meat. I took that and all the other lettuce to the Miami Rescue Mission.

As for the food that was eaten…

Dessert from Salumeria 104 in Midtown Miami.

Thursday, after all the food rescuing, I got hungry so I stopped at Salumeria 104 in Midtown for a tasty green pea soup, a side of grilled asparagus and a delectable slice of almond cake with vanilla gelato on the side.

Sunday we headed to the Hard Rock Cafe at Bayside to celebrate my great niece Hailey’s 14th birthday. It was a nice afternoon enjoying each other’s company, checking out the memorabilia and seeing all the changes they’ve made to Bayside.

Oh… and last Friday night Vance and I celebrated our 33rd wedding anniversary at Cafe Avanti on Miami Beach. It’s become one of our favorite go-to restaurants for delicious, classic Italian food. No pictures but I will tell you that we shared the antipasto rustico, the bucatini gamberoni with shrimp, leeks and sundried tomatoes and the classic tiramisu for dessert. Chef’s kiss!

I always love to share what I’ve written with you. This week’s article, published in the Artburst Miami blog, is about artist Avery Pack and his exhibition “Wheel” at Primary Projects in Little River. Click here to read it.

Tonight we’re headed to the theater, Actors’ Playhouse on Miracle Mile to see the play “Proof.” I’m looking forward to being in the Miracle Theater again, it’s been so long. Click here to read the review on Artburst Miami.

And on Sunday I’ll be doing a small catering gig at the Moss Center in Cutler Bay following the matinee performance by Karen Peterson and Dancers. I feel lucky that she’s hired me again to cater another of her intimate post-performance get togethers.

A pretty, uplifting arrangement I made entirely from plants around the yard. Sure brightens up the room!

And here’s a parting photo of some bright greenery to uplift your day.

That’s it for this week, see you in your inbox again next Friday. Thanks for reading!
