Fancy dinner, a birthday, movies and more
Happy Birthday AJ! Yes, I’m starting off with a birthday wish for the new Dad and other half to my niece Elena.
And now that I’ve done that, here we go!
My first recommendation, if you want to see a cool, quirky movie that will have you simultaneously laughing and fuming at corporate America, go see Dumb Money. It’s the crazy, almost unbelievable true story of Keith Gill, a financial analyst and investor and yes, YouTuber who took on Wall Street and won by making GameStop (the video store) a hot commodity. I know what you’re thinking, that movies are so expensive nowadays but go before 6 p.m. and tickets are cheaper. Or wait until it’s available to stream I guess. I for one, loved seeing it in the theater. It made for a fun late afternoon date with my husband. Before that we went for a late breakfast at Jimmy’s Place in North Miami at 510 NE 125 St. an institution that’s just five minutes from our house where I had the tenderest biscuits ever! I’d share a link to their site but they haven’t got one.
Now let’s see what else. Oh…
I attended a lovely, semi-fancy olive oil tasting, multi-course dinner prepared by Chef Grace Ramirez at the beautiful Leku Restaurant that’s within the Rubell Museum in Allapattah. Between the delightful welcome cocktail, pan con tomate with iberico ham, grilled octopus and charcoal squid ink potatoes (best presented dish of the night) and a decadent basque cheese tart for dessert, it was certainly a decadent evening. And I recommend next time you’re buying olive oil you give La Española a try, it’s quite good.
This morning, I had breakfast at Cafe Creme with my buddy George Neary, where we shot the breeze over Greek yogurt with fresh berries (his order) and two delicate and fluffy scrambled eggs, a green salad and half baguette (mine). I took my leftovers home which my husband Vance enjoyed.
I also want to let you know about a new concept that’s coming to The Citadel, one of my favorite food halls in Miami. It’s called Pho Sho and from the masterminds behind Phuc Yea a longtime favorite restaurant of mine in the MiMo District. It’s great Vietnamese cuisine and I’m certainly going to give it a try soon. Their grand opening is tomorrow from 6-8 p.m. Click here to check out Pho Sho’s IG account. It’s a pretty catchy name too… Pho Sho.
I also have to recommend Shorecrest Microgreens to you. My friend Monica Uribe grows them and sells them at the Legion Park Farmers Market on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. She’s part of the Urban Oasis Farmers Market there and has been for years. They’re small but hearty and go great on salads and sandwiches! You can also order online through the Urban Oasis site.
And here’s a link to my article in Artburst Miami which was just published today on the all-female theater production company Femuscripts. Click here to read about it.
Tomorrow I’m looking forward to seeing Nick compete in his Special Olympics softball game in the morning and going to Jimmy’s Place for dinner. Then Sunday I’m doing brunch with the girls at Ita’s house. It should be fun!
That’s what I’ve got for this week, see you next Friday.
