Cute baby and drumline

Yes, it is Saturday, not Friday afternoon/night when this is hitting your inbox. But here I am, a day later (hey, it happens sometimes when Fridays get busy).

Joaquin, lovingly cuddled with my sister Abuela Susy.

Baby Joaquin arriving home, cradled in his Dad AJ’s arms.

The first thing I have to mention is that adorable cutie in the picture above, my new great nephew Joaquin, born Sept. 20 to my niece Elena. I got to meet him in person on Thursday and it was glorious!

Last Saturday night, I attended a very moving exhibition at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex “A Call to the Ancestors” honoring those buried at Lincoln Memorial Park in Brownsville that also looked at the cemetery’s past and future. I was honored to be invited to attend opening night by Award-winning Miami Herald photojournalist Carl Juste who also curated the exhibition. I encourage you to visit Carl’s Instagram @ipcartspace to read more about the show which will be on view through October.

Carol City Senior High School Chiefs drumline

Yesterday morning I attended the launch event for a new arts education initiative Art Look Miami, a new endeavor spearheaded by The Miami Foundation and Miami-Dade County Public Schools, which was held at the Arsht Center in Downtown. It is described as “the first county-wide online tool capturing, connecting and tracking public-school arts education and opportunities.” I sat and watched a student from Norland Senior High School mesmerize us with her spoken word piece, a group of Miami-Dade County Public School students from the Miami Children’s Chorus and Young Musicians Unite sing their hearts out and the drumline from Carol City Senior High School impress us with a jaw-dropping performance. I can’t wait to share my article on this initiative and I hope the article will be seen far and wide and hopefully make a difference in expanding arts education in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Adina, me, Vance and Rick at the Pickleball Birthday Party last night.

Then last night Vance and I attended a Pickleball-themed birthday party. We got to spend time with our friends Rick and Adina who are longtime friends of Debbie the birthday girl. Vance also knows Debbie and her husband through his job at Princess Cruises. There was great Mexican food and delicious creamy Italian ice and plenty of action on the Pickleball courts. Vance and I played a few rounds!

Isabelle sporting her Cuban flag

Mazen and his fresh mohawk!

And because we’re in the thick of it celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, I have to share a picture of my great niece Isabelle proudly sporting a Cuban flag painted on her face. And don’t miss my great nephew Mazen and his brand new mohawk!!!

That’s all for this week, there’s more to come again and with that I leave you with a very chunky feline visitor that I spotted outside my window this week and a view of another lovely walk through Biscayne Park.
