A play and NYC
As I sit down to write this week’s blog, I’m enjoying some delicious hazelnuts that I bought in NYC. That’s where I was this Monday through Thursday, taking in the sites while visiting my son Michael and meeting his girlfriend Janet. Nick came along too of course, to complete his birthday trip!
But let’s backtrack to last Saturday when I saw the wonderful play “The Equivalent of Sensation” at Sandrell Rivers Theater. I went with Monica and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s an-all female production, written, produced and acted by women. It’s an imaginative look at the connection between four women in a story of feminism and defiance that takes place in an art gallery. Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas and the Cone sisters are the main players and a figure from a Matisse painting plays a role too. If you’re interested, there’s another chance to see the play this weekend at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. Click here for info.
Sunday was a quiet day at home packing for the trip to NYC.
Luckily, both flights departed on time and the weather in New York, except for one heavy rain shower, was fantastic.
I spent the four days with Nicholas, Michael and Janet and we…
Visited a great indie bookstore and record store Westrider Rare & Used Books and Westrider Records. I bought a couple of great books at Westrider Books and spent lots of time just admiring the ambiance there.
The beers were great at Malachy’s Irish Pub and The Wallace Bar and the chocolate chip espresso scone from Alice’s Tea Cup made for a great breakfast in the hotel room. Alice’s is one of those cool spots that’s hidden, you have descend a few stairs to enter this quaint and adorable tea room and bakery.
Breakfast at the Manhattan and Metro Diners were the ultimate New York experience as were our visits to The Cathedral of St. John the Divine and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. My niece Elena who lived in New York for seven years later told me the Cathedral is the largest one in the world. It’s breathtaking and the Museum was quite impressive as well. We saw works by Degas, Monet, Manet and Winslow Homer and an elegant and historic interior design exhibition.
The NY Mets game at Citifield was a really fun night where we saw both teams smack homeruns outta the park. There were five in total and the Mets were victorious. The brick ballpark was a sight and the cute apple that rises and fireworks shot off after every Mets homer was pretty cool.
We also explored some different parks besides this time. Not that Central Park isn’t a must see but visiting these other two parks was really fun. Michael and Janet took Nick and I to Morningside and Riverside Parks where we walked under canopies of trees and saw cute turtles. The light and vermicelli salad Michael made for me at Pier i Cafe was truly delicious and so were the noodles at Udom Thai in Brooklyn. Pier i Cafe is lovely and located along Riverside Drive with a great view of the Hudson River.
Oh and we did make one really cool stop in front of the diner always featured in the sitcom “Seinfeld.” Fans of the show will surely recognize the iconic sign.
That’s it for this New York edition of this week’s blog. I’ll have more to tell you next week but for now, I say goodnight!
