Around my ‘hood & more

Promised I’d be back in a week and here I am.

And…I’m so excited to tell you about the Jazz at MOCA concert I just attended. Every last Friday of the month for more than two decades now in North Miami at the MOCA Plaza has been dedicated to Jazz at MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami). I’ve seen some amazing artists there like Nestor Torres and Arturo Sandoval. Tonight’s show was no exception. I watched in awe as Grammy-winning Australian saxophonist Troy Roberts ripped through a 90-minute set backed by his equally talented guitarist, bassist, keyboard player and drummer, all friends of his for many, many years. They took the audience through a journey of highs and lows of roaring jazz and melodies. Click here to read about Troy and his many accomplishments and where he’s playing and while you’re there, peruse the MOCA website to see what’s coming up. They’ve got so much to offer and their current exhibition alone is worth a visit. Click here to visit Troy’s website and get to know him, the musicians in his band and much more.

Other than that, these past two weeks I’ve…

Had the honor and privilege of interviewing Barney Mayrsohn, a World War II Veteran who is 98 years old and a resident of North Miami’s Quayside Condominium. He’s led an extraordinary life and is the subject of my latest profile in the Biscayne Times. I’ll share a link when the story is published.

I also interviewed an amazing nurse Jennifer Canton from South Dakota who was the subject of a profile I wrote for Compass Magazine, the publication at Preservation College where Canton studied nursing. Canton’s life and career have been filled with triumphs and perseverance. Both are true heroes.

Now going back to North Miami, there’s just so much happening in my neighborhood. Our downtown is filling up with beautiful murals by local artists (I’ll try to take some photos while I’m out and about which is often, and share right here in this blog) and we’ve got another new brewery Epoca Brewing to add to the mix. I also recently went to our lovely North Miami Library to donate some books and found it buzzing with activity. So glad our city leaders cared enough to revamp and refurbish it since so many residents spend time there, using their many resources.

I’ll be back next week with more. For now, thanks as always for reading and see you next Friday.

Have a wonderful weekend and even better week!
