Whirlwind week
And yes, that headline is referring to both the recent Hurricane Milton barreling through Florida and my daughter Elizabeth coming back home for four days because of it. But also, because I’ve got a lot to tell you!
First and foremost, as far as I know, my family members who were in Milton’s path are all OK thank goodness.
Now here we go… starting with last Sunday when on a gross, dreary, rainy afternoon, I went to O Cinema on Miami Beach to see one of the coolest film/music mash-ups I’ve ever experienced. They were screening the classic B&W 1922 silent film “Nosferatu” set to the music of Radiohead’s “Amnesiac” and “Kid A” albums. It was part of the Silents Synced program created by Josh Frank who has been running the Blue Starlite independent drive-in movie theater in Austin. It was such a treat that he introduced the film, told us how this was his passion project and how he brought it to life with virtually no budget or contacts. Click here to visit the Silent Synced site and click here to visit their Instagram page. And if this is something you think you’d like he’s got more of these on the way and they’ll be at cities around the country. They will be set to music by Pearl Jam, REM and They Might be Giants.
Monday night, Elizabeth arrived to ride out Hurricane Milton here with us. It wasn’t safe for her to stay in Orlando and I was so glad she was here.
Tuesday I just ran some errands with her and we hung out at home and then on Wednesday, since that was the day we needed to hunker down, we went nowhere. She baked some delicious homemade cream cheese pumpkin muffins with streusel topping.
Thursday, since the storm had passed and it was safe to journey out, Elizabeth and I decided to grab lunch at Tacos vs. Burritos Cantina, a great local spot just minutes from the house on 79 St. just east of Biscayne Blvd. We chowed down on chile rellenos, a burrito, elote and churros for dessert. They’ve got a great salsa bar too. I loved the tomatillo and avocado salsa and their pico de gallo and homemade chips are fire.
Then that night Vance, Elizabeth and I went to the movies. We watched “Saturday Night” about bringing “Saturday Night Live’s” pilot episode to air back on October 3, 1975. That movie is so fast-paced you can barely catch your breath with all the behind the scenes running around, banter, fights and well… lots of other stuff. Go see it and you be the judge.
And there you have it, we’re all caught up. Tonight, I’m headed just a few blocks from my house to the opening of ““We Got The Power: Women Pulling at the Threads of Social Discourse” at The CAMP Gallery where my buddy Rosa Henriquez and about 80 other artists have their work on display.
Actually, I also want to encourage you to check out Little Haiti Little River Art Days on Oct. 19, something I just discovered today. Click here to learn about the tour through these two neighborhoods and find links to all the spots they’re visiting. I’ve been to several of them including Collective 62, Laundromat Art Space and Locust Projects. Tomorrow I’m going to visit The Things Lab which is also on this tour. Unfortunately, I’ll be out of town on Oct. 19 and won’t be back in time to take this tour. Hopefully they’ll have one in November, I’m thinking this will be a monthly thing.
And finally, the most important news… today was my husband’s last day at Princess Cruise Lines. On Oct. 21 he starts a new job with Port Canaveral and where I’ll be headed with Nicholas to visit him late next week. He’s very excited and so am I and although he’ll have to commute to Port Canaveral several times a week, he’ll be back in Miami most likely for four days. I’m very happy for him!
That’ll do it for this week, I’ll see you all right here next Friday when I’ll be composing this blog from Cape Canaveral!
Have a great weekend and stay safe.
