Josh's Deli amps up game with elegant Friday night prix fixe dinners twice a month

At this dinner you won't find the famous "Jewban Sandwich" that owner Josh Marcus concocted at his beloved Josh's Deli in Surfside. Known as a "fake" deli because he loves to mix it up and incorporate pork into many of his recipes, Marcus is serving up a feast at his Friday night dinners.

Split pea soup

The friendly and delightful John English prepares to wow us with his wedge salad preparation.

Starting off with warm bread and soft, creamy butter is never a bad thing. The choice for the first course was either a split pea soup (which features Josh's fresh pastrami) or the pastrami wedge salad that's prepared tableside. All the ingredients for the salad are presented on a table that's wheeled over and features fresh lettuce wedges ready to be dressed with Josh's pastrami strips, heirloom tomatoes, thinly sliced red onions, chunky blue cheese and creamy blue cheese dressing.

The star of the night was a choice of either a 28-day dry aged rib eye for two or a 40-day dry aged porterhouse for two. Both were reverse seared in cast iron with rosemary and beef butter. Those perfectly cooked sliced meats were served on a wooden board surrounded by roasted mushrooms in miso and garlic butter that are oh so tender, a deep and rich bone marrow shepherds pie and garlic confit with charred olives. You're gonna take plenty of this home, trust me, and that's totally fine.

And, if you've got room for dessert, the choice was either a large slice of carrot cake or dulce de leche cheesecake. Either's a good choice, believe me.

The next specialty dinners will be happening Jan. 18 and 25 at and Feb. 14 and 22. There are two seatings each time, at 7 and 8:45 p.m. Price is $65 per person for the four-course menu. The menus vary a bit and that's always a nice surprise.
