Heaven on earth and more

Nick after the movie

When you get a request from your son to go to a movie and visit his friend at the mall you can’t say no. Especially since Vance and I are movie lovers and I love Farmer’s Markets and this gave us a chance to do both. So that’s how we spent Saturday afternoon, at Aventura Mall watching “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” which was actually pretty good. It had cool animation, was entertaining and funny. After the movie we walked across the mall to visit Nick’s friend Makayla who was at her parent’s booth at the Farmer’s Market. They sell handmade soaps, lotions and other personal care items. I can tell you their soaps are wonderful on your skin and smell great!

Beautiful pond along the Patch of Heaven Sanctuary nature trail.

Sunday we spent the afternoon at a Celebration of Life at Patch of Heaven Sanctuary in The Redland for our neighbor Patrick. It was the perfect spot to honor and remember a wonderful person. His wife Ericka and their sons Julian and Nico are dear friends who we’ve known for nearly 20 years. We walked through this peaceful haven, stopping at beautiful spots to meditate and share memories about him. It was a truly special and spiritual experience.

That’s a fried green tomato with the bagel and lox with thin sliced red onions and cream cheese. The sangria was refreshing and a great accompanying brunch drink.

Cheesy scrambled eggs with a crispy, light toston and tomatillo salsa for dipping and topping.

Yesterday I enjoyed another Miami Spice experience. This time it was brunch with my wonderful friend Monica. We went to Seawell Fish ‘n Oyster located in the adorable Kimpton Angler’s Hotel on South Beach. We had a yummy three course meal and passed the time catching up while sipping sangria, eating a light version of bagels and lox for our appetizer and cheesy scrambled eggs with chorizo as our entree. For dessert we cooled off with a trio of gelatos made in house by their Italian chef. Miami Spice ends Sept. 30, click on the link to see all the restaurants participating. And don’t sleep on the Kimpton, they’ve got a rooftop bar and their neighboring Minnow Bar, either of which are a great spot to grab a cocktail.

I don’t have my own article to share this week but did want to share this one I saw in the Miami New Times about a photography exhibition of everyday observations in Little Havana by longtime resident and photographer Steve Wright. His reason behind the show’s an honorable one. It’s his way of fighting for historic preservation in the neighborhood. Looking forward to checking it out. Click here to read the article.

This weekend I’m looking forward to a lovely sunset cruise tomorrow night with great friends The Sharfsteins and The Wutzlers and then barbecue and pool time at Casa Wutzler on Sunday.

This is the piece inspired by a picture of my daughter Elizabeth listening to a seashell.

And if by some chance you’re in Washington DC between Sept. 14 and Oct. 12, visit The Ven Embassy Row hotel to take in the exhibition Latin Xpressions and pay special attention to the work of Jorge Garcia-Meitin Zamorano, that’s my cousin. A couple of his pieces were inspired one each by my daughter Elizabeth and my sister Ana. Here’s a link to the hotel site that mentions the exhibit.

There’s more to come next week including a link to an article I wrote about the Community Arts Program at Coral Gables Congregational Church. Hope you have a wonderful long weekend and thanks for reading.
