Glittery birthday, lacrosse & guitar
George Neary is a character, I’ve known him for years and he’s become so much more than an acquaintance, he’s my friend. The ever-glittery George turned 75 this year and has celebrated with NUMEROUS parties. I made it to ONE of his parties at a bar I’d never been to. It’s called Bob’s Your Uncle and I actually went to the one in NYC back in January when I visited Michael.
Here’s a picture of George in full mariachi mode wearing a glittery get up. Some kind of clothes with glitter or shimmer was an actual request on the invitation for anyone attending the party. It was a lot of fun, happy birthday George!
Saturday Nick had a regional Special Olympics soccer tournament and although his City of Miami team lost the first game, they won the second one 6-0. They didn’t advance but did give it their all. And thanks to our friends Rick and Adina Sharfstein for coming out to cheer him on, braving the heat at Nova Southeastern University that day.
That same Saturday I made every attempt to catch up with my friends Kevin and Michelle at the beach but didn’t find parking so… I ended up at Surfside where I spent a glorious couple of hours swimming, relaxing and just taking in the scenery.
Tuesday morning I spent it at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Downtown Miami helping out at the Arts & Business Council of Miami’s Miami Arts Marketing Project social media workshop. I was furiously taking notes and will be writing an article about it. Stay tuned.
That afternoon I drove out to Doral to first visit my friend and artist Ana Martinez Orizondo whose work I love. For her latest series she’s painting palm fronds with amazing patterns and colors. It was a great visit catching up with her and getting to see her work up close.
I then rushed over to Ronald Reagan High School to watch my great niece Hailey perform at the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendents Honors Festival. Once again, like last year, she was front and center on the guitar. Watching the middle and high school students perform a nice variety of musical pieces composed by musicians with ties to Miami was really cool.
Finally, I have to share a couple of photos of a few of my other great nieces and nephews in all their glory! A special congrats to Isabelle and her Lacrosse team at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Bradenton, FL on their undefeated season (14-0!) and who are competing in the regional quarterfinals tonight. Good luck!!! Then there’s Hazel, my nephew Tony’s daughter. They live out in Seattle and that’s her “doing work around the house.” And the fireball Mazen my niece Nicole’s son showing off his…CAST! That kid!
One more thing to share with you, my latest article for Artburst Miami on artist Tiffany Madera. Click here to read the article about her latest project Global South Movements and how she continues on her quest to recognize women in the arts.
That’s it for this week. Next up, we’re leaving for a road trip today to visit my sister-in-law Kerri and her husband Paul in Tarpon Springs. Hoping I might get to see my brother in Bradenton too. Looking forward to getting out of town.
Have a great weekend and see you next Friday!
