Fun last weekend then… rain!

The headline says it all. Last weekend was so much fun and then… whoosh, the rain wallop, the deluge, the drenching, the pouring started and we’re still in it but not as bad anymore thank goodness.

But before that…

West African author selections at the North Miami Public Library.

Colorful art on display at the North Miami Public Library, a highlight of the West African night event.

Friday I spent the evening at the North Miami Public Library where they were celebrating West African culture and introducing their Summer Reading Program. They tied the two together, with displays of books by West African authors and serving up delicious West African food from Moji African Restaurant in North Miami. I can’t wait to try out that hidden gem that I’ve never heard of.

On Saturday Vance and I had lunch at another little hidden gem, this one a Mexican spot near the airport called Taqueria los Potrillos. The tacos are delicious and inexpensive. I had chicken and carnitas with a nice frosty Modelo draft beer. I recommend it if you love authentic, no fuss Mexican food.

Later that day I attended the closing reception of artist/dancer Roxana Barba’s exhibition/dance performance at Laundromat Art Space in Little Haiti. I love this gallery and recommend this as well if you’d love to see lovely artwork and visit with the artists in their studios. Roxana is married to artist/filmmaker Claudio Marcotulli also an artist at Laundromat who I profiled for Artburst Miami a while ago. Here’s a link to my profile on him.

Me, JC and Vance at LoanDepot Park on Sunday.

Sunday we watched our beloved Florida Marlins LOSE to the Cleveland Guardians but the game was still really fun. It was a nice way to spend the afternoon and we ran into a longtime friend JC Trueba who used to work at Carnival Cruise Line with Vance. Always fun seeing him.

Monday night, before the rain-soaked week began, I attended the Arts & Business Council of Miami’s Creative Happy Hour at the InterContinental Hotel in Downtown Miami. They were honoring attorney Bruce Levine who has spent three decades advocating for artists and arts organizations and providing pro bono services to them with regards to copyright, contracts and patents. I had the privilege of interviewing him this week for the article I’m writing about the event and as we spoke, I discovered he’s got a fascinating background. I’m looking forward to sharing my article next week.

Me and Chef Betty in the Lotus House kitchen where I delivered her boxes and boxes of chocolate filled brioche.

Tuesday I started my day driving around in a downpour because I’d committed to pick up boxes of surplus food at a West Hialeah Warehouse called Lineage and delivering it to Lotus House, a women’s shelter in Overtown. It was a big task but seeing Chef Betty’s smile when I got to Lotus House made it all worthwhile.

And because this blog isn’t enough for you to read, here’s my latest article for Artburst Miami on the Community Arts Program Summer Concert Series at Coral Gables Congregational Church. My Editor was very pleased with the article and so was I which made me doubly happy! Click here to read it. It’s a great lineup of artists.

Our rain gutter doing it’s job during a downpour.

And that’s about it. The rest of the week was spent mostly inside working, writing, cooking and watching it pour day after day.

A blue crab crawling around in Biscayne Bay waters.

There was a bit of a break this morning so I took advantage and took a stroll by the bay and we had some gorgeous sunsets too. Check out the pictures above.

That’s all for this week, see you here in your inbox next Friday! Peace out (does anyone use that expression anymore?) LOL
