Free and cheap things to do this weekend

Variety is the spice of life and this is one spicy weekend in Miami. Don't get confused, it's not Miami Spice yet, but you can groove to great music in the Gables at two events, bust a gut at Yo Space in Little Haiti, nosh on Greek food, hunt for clues in Downtown and honor one of the best children's authors of all time. Carnaval on the MileMiracle Mile becomes a fully pedestrian-friendly street for two days this weekend. The annual party kicks off Carnaval Miami week and it's got art, booze, food and plenty of music. Billed as a World Music & Arts Festival, they've got two artists villages, music by local bands on three stages, Bacardi and Heineken and lots of delicious food. Street artist Atomik created this year's theme image. March 3 from 10 a.m. to midnight and March 4 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Click here for all the details.Giralda Under the StarsBefore you head to the Mile, spend Friday night eating, drinking and listening to music on the now always pedestrian-friendly Giralda Avenue. This spot has become a popular place to kick off the weekend during their First Fridays Under the Stars event. Performing this weekend are Latin funk bands Elastic Bond and Xperimento. The communal spot Yo Space Gallery & Studios in Little Haiti has a couple of comedy events you'll want to hit up. First it's Sh!ts 'n Giggles Open Mic night followed by Just the Tip Comedy Show the next night. Take some time to laugh a little, listen to DJ's spin and play ping pong and Nintendo 64. Sh!ts 'n Giggles is March 3 from 8-10 p.m. and Just the Tip is March 4 from 7-10 p.m. at 294 NE 62 St. Click here to RSVP on Eventbrite for either event.Saint Sophia Greek FestivalThis event is free before 5 p.m. After that it's $7 admission, but it's worth it because inside it's a rousing good time, Greek style. Immerse yourself in Greek music and dance with various groups performing throughout the day. Plus, indulge in plenty of Greek goodies like baklava, dolmades (grape leaves) and other specialties. One of our most beloved children's wordsmiths of all time would've been 114 this year and the Miami Children's Museum is throwing a free bash to honor him. Bring the kids after school for face painting, pictures with various Dr. Seuss characters, games and plenty of yummy birthday cake. March 2 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 980 MacArthur Cswy., Miami. Click here for more info.Herald HuntDo you like hunting for clues? Perhaps you have a detective's instinct. Then you won't want to miss the annual Herald Hunt taking place at Museum Park in Downtown. Pulitzer-prize winning humorist and syndicated columnist Dave Barry again presides over the wacky event. You're gonna need to bring your Herald Hunt instructions from the print (gasp! yes, print) edition of the March 4 Miami Herald. That will tell you all you need to know.
