Finally went to F&F and loved it
I had always wondered about Fritz & Franz Bierhaus at 60 Merrick Way in Coral Gables, what the food and atmosphere were like. All these years driving through the area, knowing they were the place to celebrate Oktoberfest but always somehow missing out on that party year in and year out.Well today that all changed. I went to Fritz & Franz to interview the delightful co-owner Peter Lerperger who showed me hospitality yes, he fed me to no end, and truly enjoyed bringing me the specialties of Germany and Austria to sample.First he brought over a small, warm, soft pretzel with a delicious spread they call liptauer which I'd never had and found absolutely delectable. He told me it's made with cream cheese, cottage cheese, herbs and paprika (which gives it it's beautiful orangey/salmon color). Wiener schnitzel was next served with German style potato salad, a bowl of of sauerkraut, a homemade sausage and finally another version of veal, this one smothered in a decadent mushroom sauce with tiny slivers of bacon and a side of spaetzel. I was most pleasantly surprised with the sauerkraut which was mild and delicious, unlike the disgustingly pungent, tart kind I've always been accustomed to. Peter seemed to agree saying that "to eat the sauerkraut served in our country you've got to hold on to your pants!"The food was incredibly authentic and the atmosphere was old world European/German pub. Peter told me that they'll get packed this summer during the upcoming soccer matches and their love of the game is evident in their decor.Of course, nothing goes better with hearty German food than a good beer. He's got an incredible selection of specialty German ones, several on draft and plenty more by the bottle. He received two deliveries of brews while I was there and the second batch, several kegs stacked up high, he immediately recognized. This is a guy who knows his beer and what his country does best. He told me that Austria is filled with small craft breweries and local pubs and that these spots are revered in those towns. They take great pride in producing quality brews. He had me sample a fantastic wheat beer served in a beautiful beer glass.I left F&F satisfied. It felt good to finally step inside this place and once there, I was transformed. The great conversation and the fact that my belly was full truly made the experience complete. So at the risk of sounding cliche, I can honestly say, just as that famous Austrian once said..."I'll be back."
