Dos Croquetas, Yardbird & Zak the Baker

Hi all, it’s Friday and thank goodness! It’s a very rainy day here in Miami but all is good.

I want to kick off this week’s blog with something I forgot to mention in last week’s blog, the 10th Anniversary of the wonderful Yardbird Southern Table & Bar on Miami Beach.

It was a great event with a set menu of some wonderful dishes which I paired with an old fashioned cocktail while my husband Vance chose their specialty blackberry bourbon cocktail.

We had a delectable white bean dish, an assortment of meats on a skewer served searing over a black pot, a great salad with a huge wedge of blue cheese and the most amazing roasted leeks presented to resemble scallops. The latter was by far my favorite. The fried oreos for dessert were pretty special too!

This week I finally got to visit Dos Croquetas in West Miami and I had a little sampler including the media noche croqueta, the roasted chicken croqueta and the Mexican street corn croqueta which looked more like arrancini because it was big and round. All of them were outstanding, if you like croquetas make it a point to go there. They’ve got a huge variety to choose from, at least 50!

Then today, I did my weekly Friday pick up at Zak the Baker where I take what they didn’t sell for the day and drive it over to the Miami Rescue Mission. It was pouring but I made the delivery and it felt great!

Here’s a little something I wrote while I was waiting for the bakery to close up for the day and for them to graciously load up my car:

Sitting here enjoying a delicious cheese danish and hot chocolate. Watching as the rain continues to fall and I’m about to do one of my favorite things of the week. Deliver what wasn’t sold at Zak the Baker to the Miami Rescue Mission.

It’s just a short drive over and all I am is a means of transporting all these baked goods from Point A to Point B.

But the destination is where I know these yummy fresh baked goods will be enjoyed!

I hear the whirr of machines and employees tending to customers. A group of friends at the table behind me having a lively conversation. An employee hurries by, grabs some utensils and then makes his way to that table.

The nice guy that took care of me at the register saunters by. His long legs in loose black jeans, white dish towel hanging out of one back pocket, his cell phone peeking out of the other.

The girl I see there every Friday walks by carrying two oversized trays which she places in the back, walking past large bags of baking supplies they keep on display.

It’s a lively place, yet mellow too. Music…clanking plates and cups…whirring coffee grinder. It’s a bakery symphony.

And one final image, of the gorgeous view from Lehman Park that I captured while having an al fresco breakfast this week on one of their waterfront benches.

It was a nice week overall, although it took a bit getting used to now that Vance is back in the office at his new job and Nick is back in full swing at his program and playing for Special Olympics.

Hope you enjoyed reading and I’ll see you right here next Friday. Have a great one!
