Dad’s 97th & more this past week

Yesterday would’ve been my Dad’s 97th birthday. Every time I listen to a Stevie Wonder song I think of him because that was one of his favorite singers. In his honor (and because I love Stevie too), I have plenty of Stevie’s songs on my Spotify. Happy birthday in heaven Papi.

This past week was also all about art, so much art, in all forms and types.

Last Saturday, after having gone to a wonderful art exhibition on Friday night (which I mentioned in last week’s blog), I went to the Bird Road Arts District for their monthly open studios. I was there to support my friends Jean and Iggy Font, of Warehouse 4726 and FontSquared who were celebrating the launch of their new endeavor CollabARTive, a non-profit arts organization where they’re offering flexible and affordable studio space to artists and creatives. Click on the link above to find out all about it.

That night I also met local artist Juan Sebastian Restrepo Marquez, whose black and white work really resonated with me. Juan and I had a wonderful conversation and I look forward to visiting him again next month during the next Bird Road Arts District event on Oct. 15. Click here to visit his website.

Then yesterday, I visited Emerson Dorsch Gallery to check out their latest exhibition of works by local artist Karen Rifas entitled “To Weave a Threshold,” which is up until Oct. 22nd. Click here to visit their gallery website and get a preview of Karen’s diverse body of work currently on display. I saw Karen and her husband at last Friday’s LnS Gallery opening. And I can never go to ED Gallery without also crossing the street to get some delicious Argentinian empanadas at Sur. Click here to check out their IG page. If you’re ever in the Little Haiti neighborhood I encourage you to visit both places.

Artwork by my cousin Jorge Garcia-Meitin Zamorano.

Speaking of art, I was blown away (as I always am), by my cousin Jorge Garcia-Meitin Zamorano’s latest piece. He lives in Cumberland, MD and he’s been amazingly productive for more than a year now, making amazing artwork. He will most likely be having an exhibition of his art soon. In the meantime, admire his latest piece in the photo above.

And I can’t write this week’s blog without mentioning my nephew Danny Davila whose first work as a producer has got him tearing it up on the Film Festival circuit. The film “Murmur” has been chosen for eight festivals… so far. They include festivals in Germany (which he attended), as well as in Santa Cruz, Seattle, Oaxaca, Santa Fe, Toronto and Savanah. Hoping it will be included in our very own Miami Film Festival in March 2023 so I can see it! Congrats Danny.

Autumn Casey performing with her Dad and brother at MOCA Plaza in North Miami.

A couple of other things I want to let you know about. Tonight’s cool event at MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami) with artist Autumn Casey “Between Two Swans, a performance by Autumn Casey,” where she performed in the Art Plaza with her brother on drums and Dad on bass. It was held between the two swans she created that are on display at the Plaza for the remainder of the month. Click here to visit the website and read all about it.

A Haitian Cooler cocktail and delicious calamari at Cafe Creme.

After the performance, I hung out with my cool neighbor Kristen at one of my favorite spots in my neighborhood, Cafe Creme. We enjoyed some nice conversation while sipping on their Haitian Cooler cocktail (rum, ginger beer and lemon juice) and I enjoyed some calamari along with it. See the picture above.

Finally, here’s a link to my latest article for the Artburst Miami blog about a cool event I attended last week. Click here to read the article.

A photo of the lovely beach view at Surfside, where I spent a wonderful afternoon this week.

That’s all for now. I’ll be back next Friday with more fun stuff to report, like the dance performance I plan to attend here in North Miami that will be held at the Epoca Brewing space. Looking forward to it already.
