Compliments and observations

One thing I love is to keep in touch with fellow journalists. I like to let writers know when something they’ve written has affected me in any way.

I did just that last week, when I wrote to Miami Herald Editorial Board Member Isadora Rangel to thank her for her insightful Op Ed piece about Miami ‘s dreadful traffic. I even gave her my blessing to submit my e-mail as a Letter to the Editor and lo and behold, there it was, in black and white, as the first one in Wednesday’s Opinion Page!

As you’ve probably noticed from my last few blogs, going to the theater has been a thing with me lately. This week was no different having kicked off last weekend with a night at the Arsht Center with my friend Janet to see Zoetic Stage’s presentation of the one-woman show “Cuban Chicken Soup: When There’s No More Café,” written by and starring Elena María García. Actually, she co-wrote it with Zoetic Stage Founder Stuart Meltzer. This show was actually set a decade after García’s first one-woman show “¡FUÁCATA! Or a Latina’s Guide to Surviving the Universe.” We both thoroughly enjoyed watching her talent on stage, laughing and feeling all sorts of emotions during the 90-minute show. Click here to read a review on Artburst Miami. It’s spot on and I actually edited/proofread this article and am in complete agreement with our Artburst Editor in her review.

Curtain at “Peter Pan” at the Arsht Center.

A little fun between the two lead actors of “Peter Pan” following the final bow at the Arsht Center.

I then returned to the Arsht Center on Tuesday to see a wonderfully magical production of “Peter Pan.” My sister Susy and I attended and from some amazing seats, we were whisked away to Neverland and immersed in the world of Peter, Captain Hook, Tinkerbell, Wendy and the Lost Boys. Watching Peter and the others soar through the air and enjoying the gloriously lush sets was an unforgettable experience.

If you haven’t figured it out yet, I highly recommend both shows! Peter Pan ends this Sunday while Cuban Chicken Soup runs through May 19.

Tonight, Vance and I are joining a walking tour through the Village of Biscayne Park led by the one and only Dr. Paul George, Miami’s leading historian. Then tomorrow night I’m finally going to see the Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami in their final performance of the season “Aurora’s Wedding.” I’m seriously excited for both.

And tomorrow during the day, I plan to visit a few artist studios around North Miami and Little Haiti during the Artists Open hosted by Fountainhead Residencies. It’s from 1 to 5 p.m. and a wonderful opportunity to engage with local artists and see new works. Click here for more info.

Ramzi’s lovely origami, one of many he’s created!

And last, but certainly not least, I have to share the incredible origami created by my great nephew Ramzi. The kid is so talented!

Oh and wait, one more thing… if you like or perhaps love the arts, please consider subscribing to our Artburst Miami newsletter. It’s once a week, on Fridays (just like mine). When you click to read the review I shared above, you’ll see a pop up screen to become an “Arts Insider.”

And above is a little froggy that seems to love hanging out on our mailbox at night. And below, beautiful scenery from my walk along the Simpson Park Nature Trail one morning this week.

That’s all for this week, I’ll see you right here in your inbox next Friday.
