About this week
Let’s kick this blog off with Saturday’s happening. That’s when Vance, Nick and I headed to church for some volunteer work. Unfortunately, on our way there we saw a bad car accident while sitting at a red light. It was pretty bad but everyone, thank goodness, was ok.
That night I headed to Edge Zones, a gallery in Allapattah for the opening reception of an exhibition by artist Lisu Vega. And what a surprise, while admiring her beautiful work, to get to chat with her and realize that I’ve been to her studio at Laundromat Art Space in Little Haiti. The exhibition is entitled “Everything I forgot?” and ends on Sept. 24. You’ll love her work.
After the art show I headed to Moshi Moshi in MiMo for a Japanese dinner. I love that place and my solo dinner was quite nice. I had ordered the crunchy crab ceviche and vegetable tempura roll with asparagus, eggplant and sweet potato tempura. I ate the whole thing, no leftovers, the portions were perfect.
Sunday was uneventful except for getting Nick ready to attend the black-tie wedding of his high school buddy Andrew Marcus. He looked so sharp in his bowtie and he had a great time!
Tuesday was Nick’s 27th birthday and he chose to attend a Best Buddies get-together at Flanigan’s and we brought his buddy Geno along. Although it was an hour and a half drive (in the rain!) to get to the Kendall location, Nick and Geno had a great time. The Best Buddies representative hosting the event even got Nick a cake which we all enjoyed. The Flanigan’s crew was nice enough to sing him happy birthday!
Wednesday, the gang was back together at trivia and The Wutzlers brought their A-game as usual and we got second place! That means $25 toward our bill next week. Very cool.
Then last night I’d say was the highlight of my week. I attended the Brushes with Cancer art opening at the Arsht Center. You’ll recall I shared my article on the program that I wrote for Biscayne Times a few weeks ago. In attendance were the artists and their “inspirations” their works were based on. It was amazing to hear these women share their stories and even more special to see the inspired art pieces in person, hanging at the Arsht Center. Those pieces will be on display through mid-October. If you’ll be attending a performance at the Arsht’s Knight Concert Hall I encourage you to view the works. There are also tours of the Arsht Center Mondays and Saturdays at noon and you can see them then as well.
As I chatted with one of the inspirations I found out about the art therapy program at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. She showed me some amazing art work she created while receiving her cancer treatment that really helped her through that very tough time. I wrote about a similar program at Baptist Hospital’s Miami Cancer Institute and look forward to one day writing about this program as well.
Today, I completed an article on the new co-directors of the O, Miami Poetry Festival and look forward to sharing that with you when it’s published.
That’s all for this week. I won’t be writing my blog this coming Friday because I’m headed on a girls trip to Charleston, South Carolina with my besties Monica and Gema. So most likely this blog will hit your inbox on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
Until then… be well.
