2015's first Miami Spice adventure

With all the rage about Fooq's Restaurant in Overtown (yes, Overtown) I was excited to dine there when Miami Spice had already started. It was dinner with the girls for some much-needed catching up.I was happy to find out that it's right next to The Corner Bar where my niece and my son often frequent. The ice-cold $3 beer for happy hour was a nice starter before dinner and the place is actually really cool.We then headed next door to Fooq's where one of my friends immediately commented she felt like she'd been there before to what it had been before Fooq's. So, they sat us at a nice table for four and we were of course brought the tall glass bottle of water that has become the standard at most restaurants and is  a major pet peeve of mine. I never ordered these bottles yet they're brought to the table and then are charged for them! Very annoying.Fooq's JarsMoving on. So two of us decided to order off the Miami Spice menu while the other two girls ordered a burger and pasta. No question the food here is really good. We started off by ordering the Trio of Jars as an appetizer to share because they're known for these. Great choice! The jars are never the same each evening they're filled with four different spreadable concoctions that go great with the toasty bread (which if you ask for more ALSO costs extra, another point of contention!). The choices that night were great and included yummy spreads that featured prosciutto in one, a very mild blue cheese in the other and an olive base for the other (there was a fourth but I can't recall the flavorings). All were delicious. As an appetizer, I decided to order their moist and incredibly flavorful votano meatballs. How could you go wrong with meatballs made of ground brisket and berkshire pork smothered in a San Marzano tomato sauce and topped with parmigiano reggiano. For the entree I chose the Asian marinated skirt steak, perfectly cooked and served over a delectable crispy green tea scented rice and stir fried vegetables.Persian sundaeDessert was a bit more difficult for me given that none of the choices screamed out ORDER ME! I chose the Persian sundae because I don't like bananas and the other selection was a banana peanut butter jar. The sundae didn't thrill me probably because saffron and rosewater gelatos did not sound appetizing to me. I did however like the pistachios and valrhona chocolate pearls.Overall, it was a good experience except for dessert and the extra charge for the water and bread (not happy about that) and I made that known on their Facebook page...several times. I will however go back and give it another try.
