One year later, Wynwood Yard expands

By Josie Gulliksen for Miami.comThe one-year anniversary of hipster hangout Wynwood Yard was a full weekend blowout with the unveiling of several new concepts. If you missed it, there’s plenty of time to explore. Here’s what’s new at The Yard:

Charcoal Garden Bar + Grill

It’s The Yard’s first full-service restaurant and also, the first one in Miami to be built entirely out of modified shipping containers. Miami Chef Ken Lyon conceptualized the idea and is calling it an “analogue” menu where he’ll use only charcoal in his grill. On it he’ll prepare seasonal vegetable dishes, locally-sourced whole hogs, lambs and chickens butchered in-house plus fish and seafood.

 LivBox by Wyn-Box

Shipping containers as event spaces have been gaining popularity over the last few years (think Centro Cultural Espanol in the Omni/Arts & Entertainment District). That concept is also now part of Wynwood Yard. The prototypical container designed by start-up Wyn-Box is available for private dinner parties, educational talks and other events. The sleek, sustainable, residential and commercial spaces were designed by the architecture firm RoyalByckovas (R&B).

Steelcity Coffee

There’s enough room in Wynwood for another coffee spot so java drinkers can now also get their fix at this concept brought here from Austria. Owners Anela Hrnic and Michael Holaschke named the spot after their original coffee shop whose name in English translates to Steelcity. Sit in the Yard’s lovely garden and sip on cappuccinos, espressos, cortaditos and flat whites.

Shnitz & Fritz

Miami’s already a melting pot so an Argentine/Israel hybrid kosher eatery is just what The Yard needs. The brainchild of brothers Bernard and Alan Klinger the menu is a mash up of all of these. One example is the gaucho sandwich with chicken schnitzel, a sunny side up egg, tomato and onion salad and chimichurri aioli. And if that’s not a mouthful then order one of their house-pickled items on the side.

Radiate Miami

Wanting to offer healthy food options as well as edible (yes, edible) beauty products, Susan Duprey, a nutritionist and certified holistic health coach offers it all in an intimate five-seat counter. Think live cultured beverages like cold-brew coffee kombucha, fermented drinks including root beer and ginger beer, and yes, an edible beauty line of shampoos, toothpastes and deodorants. If you prefer to get your items to go, you can get weekly vegan boxes including raw bread, fruit roll ups, raw crackers and nut milk.

BBQ by Darian

Chef Darian Williams knows his barbecue and Miami, that’s because he’s a native and loves to cook. This guy even makes his own barbecue grills. Williams is cooking up succulent, fall-off-the-bone ribs with pineapple barbecue sauce, baked beans and creamy coleslaw.

World Famous House of Mac

How many different variations are there of mac ‘n cheese you ask? House of Mac has enough to make your head spin, and keep you coming back for a new one. Choose from five cheese truffle mac, beef and broccoli mac, buffalo chicken mac ‘n cheese, chicken and broccoli mac, pizza mac and lobster mac. If you want to share and go all out try the blackened turkey burger or chicken & waffles to go with your mac.Check out all these new concepts during their weekly Friday Taste of the Yard events from 5-8 p.m. for $25.http://www.miami.com/things-to-do-in-miami/one-year-later-wynwood-yard-expands-144789/
