The ‘Wicked’ craze

No, I haven’t seen the movie yet and yes, it’s Saturday when I’m writing this again (maybe I should start writing my blog on Saturdays… hmmm)

Let’s catch up… last Saturday I left you with…

I was attending The Reset event at MOCA which I did where I participated in a sound healing session which was soothing and relaxing. The woman’s gentle voice and the hum of the sound bowl, the light vibration of the gong and other sound instruments. I also had a delicious chicken taco from a food truck (you know I have to mention food!) I also made an adorable tissue paper flower and connected with lots of like-minded organizations, many of which I support and whose events I attend.

Had to take a pic of this print at the printmaking exhibit at Walgreens because it’s one of my favorite Cuban sayings.

Another great printmaking piece on display.

After that I went over to the Walgreens at 74 St. and Collins on North Beach, to see the printmaking display by Tom Virgin of Extra Virgin Press. It was the next to last day so I was so happy I got to see it. His work carries a powerful message, as you can see in the few pictures I’ve posted above. I’m a big fan of Tom who was a beloved teacher at Miami Beach Senior High for a quarter century and now dedicates his time to printmaking. You can read about him in the link above.

On Tuesday, I met my friend Janet for lunch at Urban Sushi & Thai in Hallandale. I was so happy she was on vacation this past week and could meet up. I don’t see much of her because she’s always traveling for business. I’m happy to say I’ve seen her more since then which I’ll mention later (keep reading!)

Yummy dessert during the awards luncheon at the Hyatt.

Thursday morning, I headed to Downtown Miami to the Hyatt Regency and attended the 33rd Annual Tourism Professional of the Year Awards of the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism. I was invited by my buddy George Neary and Ginny Gutierrez, both superstars and on the Advisory Board. It was a lovely afternoon honoring professionals in the hospitality industry and most of all, raising money for college scholarships. George and his co-hosts Josie Podesta Soto who is also on the Advisory Board, and fellow co-host for the day Belkys Nerey of WSVN Channel 7 made it a fun morning and their enthusiasm on the stage helped raise lots of money.

Harry Clarke’s stained glass piece “Geneva Window” on display at the exhibition at The Wolfsonian.

A cute suspended art installation between Washington and Collins Avenues facing Espanola Way on Miami Beach.

Yesterday after doing a quick food rescue pick up of canned food donations at Miami Beach’s Hilton Vacations on Ocean Drive, that I’m delivering to an event this morning, I went to The Wolfsonian-FIU one of my favorite museums in Miami. I hadn’t been there in ages and I was so excited to be back. They’ve got some beautiful exhibitions on display at the moment (click the link above to see what they’re showing). The historic building itself is a work of art, if you go which I encourage you to, you’ll be mesmerized at its beauty, you truly will. And don’t miss their gift shop, it’s gorgeous too.

Then that night, I had a lovely time with my fellow St. Martha’s Catholic Church parishioners. We enjoyed each other’s company at a Thanksgiving potluck hosted for all the church ministries. I sat with the Menendez couples — Jesus and Sandy and Jose and Mildred — which made for a night full of laughter!

Me and the praying mantis at the Frost Science Museum “Bugs” exhibit opening last night.

Cute spot for a dragonfly selfie at the Frost Science “Bugs” exhibit.

To cap off the week, Vance and I finally attended a Members’ Opening Reception at the Frost Science Museum last night for their newest exhibition “Bugs,” which officially opens today. We had some tasty bites, took in the immersive show which takes an in-depth look at all types of bugs and their importance and survival tactics. They truly are remarkable those bees, dragonflies, cockroaches, orchid mantis and so many others that are featured. I even took a picture with a praying mantis that was hanging out there last night. Of course, we went up to the fourth floor to take in the incredible city views from the Vista level and we also saw their new Planetarium show all about Bugs in Space. If you’ve never been to the Frost, it’s definitely worth a visit. It was a fun date night and Vance and I vowed that we need to do more of these exhibit openings. Oh and it was great running into my friend Janet again, she was there with her godson.

Today, I’m headed to the Miami Book Fair, which ends tomorrow. I’m meeting my sisters, my niece and her adorable son there this morning. I’ll tell you about that next week and this is another event you shouldn’t miss. Again, it ends tomorrow so you can definitely check it out! And speaking of the Book Fair, see my article about it above in Thursday’s Miami Herald weekend section featured above or click here to read the whole thing on Artburst Miami where it was first published. And I also wrote about the Arts & Business Council breakfast for Artburst, click here to read that.

That’s all and I’ll see you again, next weekend!
