The week that was…a bit more normal

I can’t believe it’s finally happening, what feels like a “somewhat” return to normalcy.

I actually went to a gallery and ate outdoors at a restaurant. It felt nice, it felt normal.

A recap of this past week. It went something like this:

My son Michael coming to visit from New York for a full week. It was heavenly. Watching as he bonded with his siblings. How Nicholas and Elizabeth just took every moment they could to spend with him and he with them. The laughs, the loudness, the wrestling. It was just like old times. Today we all cried when we dropped him off at the airport but were left with great memories of his visit.

It was nice too that his visit was timed so he could attend Elizabeth’s art opening at a student showcase at ICA Miami contemporary art gallery in the Miami Design District. We were all so happy to actually visit a gallery, something I personally hadn’t done in ages.

Seeing her artwork on display in a week-long student showcase was a thrill for us as much as for her. She worked so hard and produced a vibrant, heartfelt mixed media piece which she accompanied with a beautifully written description.

That afternoon, my sisters visited so they could see Michael while he was visiting. We barbecued a ridiculous amount of food, chatted, caught up on life and were more relaxed being around each other since this whole mask-wearing, socially distanced pandemic began. It helps we’ve pretty much all gotten the first vaccine.

It was nice too when Michael and I went to get lunch in a nice big open-air spot like Hometown BBQ in Allapattah. Great food and a nice cold beer chatting with him while enjoying a beautiful Miami day was fantastic.

Hitting the beach yesterday afternoon then coming home and watching the Oscar-nominated film “Nomadland” was the best way to cap off the week.

And for me, I loved watching local artists Laz Ojalde and Natalie Zlamalova, known artistically as AMLgMATD installing their public art piece “The Visible Invisible” at MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) Plaza in North Miami. I introduced myself to them and told them how great it was turning out. The installation is now done. I actually wrote about the series of public art installations being showcased at the MOCA Plaza through the fall for Artburst Miami. Click here to read the article.

I’ll be back next week with another post. My goal is to write one weekly, perhaps every Friday recapping my week!
