The king, the Heat, the Mile

That’s how last weekend went.

First… on Friday night at the immersive theater experience “Conjuring the King” presented by Juggerknot Theatre Company. It was a fun, crazy, wild romp through the world of an Elvis fan, played perfectly by actress Susie K. Taylor. She was phenomenal in the one woman role, it’s always a blast watching Susie lose herself in a character. If you’ve been reading this blog for a while you know I’m a huge fan of that theatre company and all they do.

Nick, shooting one of his many three pointers at Doral Legacy Park during the Special Olympics competition.

Nick and some of his teammates, receiving their second place ribbons.

Saturday morning we headed to Doral Legacy Park to watch Nick compete with his City of Miami Special Olympics teammates. He made a ton of three pointers and although they ended up in second place, he played really well.

View from our nosebleed seats at the Miami Heat game, LOL.

Shawn and Vance, lifelong friends enjoying time at the Heat game.

Saturday night we had a great time watching the Miami Heat defeat the Utah Jazz with our friends Shawn and Suzanne who were in town to run the Miami Half Marathon. It was great seeing them and they loved the change in weather from Baltimore, MD where they live! And always… GO HEAT!!!!!

Michelle, Monica and me at Carnaval on the Mile, listening to a great band.

Nick, Kevin and Vance (in mid chew) finishing up his smoothie, at Carnaval on the Mile.

On Sunday, we headed to Carnaval on the Mile where we enjoyed looking at art, listening to great music and having some tasty food. The Miracle Mile block party is a tradition and an event we’ve been attending with Kevin, Michelle and Monica for years now. Recently, my Facebook memory was us at the event seven years ago!

The official poster of the 41st Annual Miami Film Festival which happens at theaters all around Miami from April 5-14.

The gorgeous rooftop pool at the Mayfair House in Coconut Grove.

Monday night I had the pleasure of attending the Miami Film Festival kick-off party at the Mayfair House Hotel in Coconut Grove. The rooftop party was truly magical. I loved chatting with so many folks from Miami’s film industry who I’ve gotten to know through my work with Artburst. I also wrote a profile on the festival’s new Executive Director so this allowed me to introduce myself to him in person (I interviewed him by phone). Click here to read my article and at the bottom you can click on the link to see the amazing lineup of films this year (or at the link above!)

Tuesday night it was wonderful catching up with my cousin Jose and his wife Becky who were in town from Colorado. We had a great dinner at Paquito’s Mexican Restaurant in North Miami Beach. If you’re ever in the area I highly recommend it!

Wednesday night we took second place at trivia and tonight we’re heading out of town for the weekend. Gonna visit my son Michael who is in Bonita Springs training for his new job with Ruths’ Chris Steakhouse. Looking forward to a little weekend road trip and hope there are more of those in our future.

However, I also wish I could be here tomorrow because I wanted to attend the Florida Humanities Festival South FL which has an amazing line up of speakers. People that are doing amazing work in our community.

I will also continue to sing the praises of…

Food Rescue US South FL, Be The Change South FL, Community Justice Project, Exchange for Change, Buddy System MIA, Dream Defenders, Miami Waterkeeper, We Count FL, The Miami Foundation and Knight Foundation. I’ve provided links. Check them out, see what they do.

And finally, Happy Women’s Day… happy weekend… be well… and see you next Friday.
