Summer doldrums
It is so hot out! Miami is hot, humid and steamy in the summer and we haven’t even lived through August yet! Ok, now that we’ve got the weather outta the way, let’s get into it!
Last Saturday was an absolute blast. After I went to the Farmer’s Market at Legion Park where I came home with a huge haul, Nick and I headed to the Bakehouse Art Complex, one of the longest running art studio spaces in Wynwood (maybe the longest) for the 12-year Anniversary/Birthday party of Bookleggers Library, they’ve got a space there. We browsed through lots of books and I took one home (they give away one book for free), had delicious Yeti’s pizza (it was soooo good) and watched a clever literary-themed bake-off. I encourage you to visit Bakehouse, the artist studios and Bookleggers.
Sunday we spent a fun afternoon at the Frost Science Museum in Downtown and my sister Susy and her grandson Joaquin (Jojo) joined us. I never tire of paying a visit to this great museum where we took in the new Space exhibition and enjoyed the aquarium, aviary and other fun interactive areas. I love the way they constructed the museum with an aquarium running straight up the middle that can be viewed from different vantage points depending on the level. I especially like viewing it from the top down because that open-air floor is my favorite.
Wednesday was Vance’s big 60th birthday and we spent it celebrating him. He wanted to keep it simple so we got lunch from Tran An Miami Vietnamese restaurant in Little River, one of his favorites and that night we took first place in trivia at Old Tom’s Cafe. Then we had some birthday cake baked special by Elizabeth.
Yesterday I spent a better part of the day shopping for college essentials for Elizabeth who leaves for UCF in Orlando in less than a month! We hit IKEA, Target and Ross. Then I headed to the Miami Beach Bandshell to catch about a half an hour of a fantastic set by the Jacuzzi Boys. I’d never seen them before and they were really good. After that I headed to Panera and picked up a bag of what they didn’t sell and brought it to Freedom Lab in Liberty City this morning.
You know I like to share my article so here’s a link to my latest on available arts grants that I wrote for Artburst Miami. I felt it was my duty to let our Miami artists and creatives know what is available to them given our Florida arts budget is being cut by $32 billion.
This weekend we might visit HistoryMiami in Downtown or maybe catch “Inside Out 2” in the theaters. Not sure yet, it’s up in the air for now.
For now, enjoy these sunset shots I took yesterday, pictures of my great neice Hailey at flight camp and my other great niece Hazel at Aquatic Camp and I’ll be back next week when I’ll have more to tell ya!
