Nothing salty about Sala'o Bar & Pescaderia
Little Havana's got a new Cuban restaurant and I'm just loving the name. Sala'o (which is Spanish slang for "salty") is a great name for a place whose menu is primarily seafood. Pictures of late author and avid fisherman Ernest Hemingway, whose ties to and love for Havana have been well documented in his novels detailing his travels there, adorn the walls here.
And daiquiris are the cocktail of choice, also an homage to Hemingway who loved the cocktail but they've also got mojitos and today, July 11, is National Mojito Day and you can get them for half off until closing.
Once you've got that mojito or daiquiri in hand, here are some delectable dishes you can enjoy.
Try the Curry Criollo with fried pieces of swordfish and vegetables in a curry sauce and herbal oil. The swordfish is fresh and meaty and the curry has the perfect amount of spice.
They've also got a Swordfish Escabeche where the fish is fried and pickled served with onions, bell pepper and pimenton de la vera. The pimenton is a smoked paprika that's standard in Spanish cooking and a great complement to the fish.
The Cazuela de Mariscos is a seafood lover's dream served in a heavy bottom pot it's a seafood casserole with sofrito, saffron wine and vegetables It's loaded with huge, juicy shrimp and tender clams all nestled in a garlicky, oniony, broth.
You're gonna love the food as much as the atmosphere here and of course, the Cuban music playing in the background almost transports you to the island.
