Brrrrr….
Yes, it’s cold in Miami, and everywhere else in FL! It snowed in Pensacola!!
Saturday was a busy day for me and where I think I may have contracted this annoying cold I’ve got. It started out with a beautiful memorial service for a beloved member of our Food Rescue volunteer community.
That was followed by a very moving dance performance at the Marshall Davis, Sr. African Heritage Cultural Arts Center called “We All.” Each choreographer introduced their piece and one of those choreographers was the amazing Robert Battle. Battle is a product of the center and went on to helm the prestigious Alvin Ailey Dance Co. His piece “The Hunt” was beyond impressive requiring those dancers to leave everything they had on that stage. The piece is over 10 minutes long and is a journey, a “hunt” as it’s appropriately called. I encourage you to find it on YouTube and I assure you, you will be moved.
Then that evening, Vance, Nick and I made our way to Zapata Gallery off Coral Way in Miami to celebrate our friend Phil’s retirement. This was a retirement party for the ages, complete with live band, a risotto bar, delicious passed appetizers and best of all, time spent with lifelong friends we hadn’t seen in years! Phil is also Nick’s godfather so it was so touching when Nick went up to the mic and gave a speech.
The rest of the week was quiet, to say the least. After a delicious fish dip from Flanigan’s for lunch on Monday, I spent the next three days in bed, nursing a fever and a scratchy throat that has now turned into a nagging cough.
Today I’m feeling much better and am now up in Cape Canaveral visiting Vance for the weekend. I drove up with Nick today and Elizabeth is on her way over. Traffic was a breeze, we had a nice lunch at Cracker Barrel and tonight we’ll be having Thai and sushi at Thai Thai just five minutes from the apartment.
Sunday, we’re gonna take a look at the townhouse we’re buying in Merritt Island, I’ll tell you about that next week.
And… a couple of other things. Don’t miss the premiere of “Sweet Magnolias” on Netflix, where my nephew Danny is the production designer. It’s a sweet show that tugs at the heartstrings. Plus, click here to read my latest article for Artburst, a quirky tale of artist Justin Long and his Meremaid Hunt Zine treasure hunt through Miami.
That’s all for this week. I’ll be right back here next Friday with Blog No. 5.
